Type Locality and Naming

The type section is on Sheshan Hill 5 km north of Gongwusu in Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia. The Sheshan Fm was named by Chen Junyuan et al. in 1984.

Synonym: (蛇山组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation has a Lower part of yellowish green sandy, calcareous shale intercalated with bioclastic limestone; and an Upper part of medium-bedded bio-calcirudite. In the type area, the Sheshan Fm is 13.7 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the sandstone intercalated with shale in the upper part of the Gongwusu Fm

Upper contact

It is disconformably overlain by the Middle Carboniferous.

Regional extent

The Sheshan Fm is restricted to the type area.

Fossils

This stratigraphic unit yields cephalopods of Eurasiaticoceras-Sheshanoceras assemblage, and is equivalent to or slightly higher than the Dicranograptus clingani zone (Fu et al., 1993).
